SoCo History
South Congress Avenue, after which this area is named, actually didn’t extend south of the river until the 1850’s when Texas patriot James Gibson Swisher donated land for a road to become Austin’s postal route and a main highway south to San Antonio. The construction of a concrete bridge in 1910 provided South Austin reliable transportation over the river, and soon after the area began to grow.
In the 1970’s, South Congress became a home for artists and musicians, a vibe that can still be felt in the region today. In the decades since, unique clothing shops, restaurants, music venues, and bars have sprung up along the avenue, attracting more people to the area, while giving rise to the artistic and trendy-friendly vibe the neighborhood is known for today.
