HISTORY OF GEORGETOWN
Georgetown was founded over 160 years ago as a trading center for the surrounding rural areas. Early settlers were attracted to the ample amount of affordable and fertile land, clean water, and abundant lumber for building homes. Early Georgetown very much depended on agriculture, but the arrival of the railroad in 1878 opened up the city’s trading and fueled their new economy. The founding of Southwestern University in 1840 had also led to more growth and establishment in Georgetown and made the city a hub for higher education. A great deal of Georgetown’s more recent history can still be seen today in the city’s several historic districts and the grand Victorian style homes that line the streets.
GEORGETOWN REAL ESTATE MARKET
Georgetown has a notable range of Victorian commercial and residential architecture. Buyers can find a generous amount of newly built homes and condo complexes that have sprung up in the area as well. About a third of the population lives in Sun City Texas, a large retirement-oriented and age restricted development spread out over 5,300 acres. Between the university, family friendly neighborhoods, and Sun City, Georgetown is truly a place that people of all ages and walks of life can call home.
EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES IN GEORGETOWN
Georgetown’s biggest festival, the Red Poppy Festival, attracts up to 30,000 people to the town’s historic square each April. Festive food, music, crafts, a car show, a basketball tournament, and a tour to see all the red poppies in residents’ front yards keep the town busy all weekend. For everyday entertainment, locals can play a round of golf at one of several golf courses, join an intramural sports team, see a live show at the historic Palace Theatre, or go swimming at at the historic Blue Hole lagoon. Every type of cuisine can be found in Georgetown and plenty of bars become venues for live music in the evenings.
A SINCERE CITY
Georgetown may have a “small town” atmosphere to it, but that definitely doesn’t mean it’s lacking in things to do! This city takes pride in itself and would be a great choice for those looking for a spacious house in a friendly, welcoming neighborhood.
