HISTORY OF KYLE TX
Kyle was founded in 1880 by settlers from the nearby towns of Blanco and Mountain City. The city was named after Fergus Kyle who, along with the family of David Moore, deeded 200 acres of land for a town shortly after the International-Great Northern Railroad built a line from Austin to San Marcos. In 1928, Kyle was officially incorporated as a general-law city with a mayor and 5 council seats. Mary Kyle Hartson, daughter to the city’s founder, was elected mayor in 1937 through a write-in vote. In the 1940s, Kyle had the only all-woman government in the city of Texas, rather noteworthy for the place and time. Today, Kyle has over 30,000 residents and continues to grow and evolve. Kyle is the 5th fastest growing city in Texas, with an annual growth rate of 125%. Being a 20 minute drive from Austin and under an hour to San Antonio gives commuters and families easy access to big city jobs while preserving the small town surroundings. Average prices for homes span the $200-300K range, but you’ll also find more upscale homes at higher prices. If you’re looking to rent a house, Kyle offers many 3 or 4 bedroom homes for rent at affordable prices.
THINGS TO DO AROUND KYLE, TX
Residents can partake in a variety of events throughout the year that are unique to the city of Kyle, such as the Bass Fishing Tournament, the Founders Day Parade, and the Kyle Fair and Musical Festival. Also a worthy ongoing event to check out is “Movies in the Park,” hosted one Friday a month at sundown on Lake Kyle. Active and athletic citizens of Kyle have a great opportunity to meet people through the town’s adult kickball and flag football leagues. In terms of dining options, residents can take their pick from a multitude of BBQ and Mexican food joints, but a real must-see is the Texas Pie Company, which offers dozens of different types of homemade pies, cheesecakes, and quiches as well as a full lunch menu. Located on Kyle’s historic downtown strip, it’s a cute little shop offering true Southern comfort dessert food.
