History of Georgetown
Georgetown was founded over 160 years ago as a trading center for the surrounding rural areas. Early settlers were attracted to the ample amount of affordable and fertile land, clean water, and abundant lumber for building homes. Early Georgetown very much depended on agriculture, but the arrival of the railroad in 1878 opened up the city’s trading and fueled their new economy.
The founding of Southwestern University in 1840 also contributed to Georgetown’s growth and helped establish the city as a center for higher education. Much of Georgetown’s history remains visible in its historic districts, downtown commercial buildings, and Victorian-style homes.
