HISTORY OF SOUTHEAST AUSTIN
Located just six miles from downtown, settlement in Southeast Austin can be traced back to the 1850s. Perhaps one of the most recognized historical fixtures in this part of town is the Onion Creek Golf Club, which was established in 1974 and hosted The Legends of Golf, the first senior professional golf tournament, for 11 years beginning in 1978. The northern side of Southeast Austin is bordered by Lady Bird Lake, a reservoir formed in 1960 as a flood control and cooling pond and is now a hot spot for recreation. The area around the lake has undergone several beautification projects over the decades and is now known for its scenic gardens and hiking/bike trail. Initially named Town Lake (which is what many locals still call it today), the lake was renamed Lady Bird Lake in 2007 after US First Lady Lady Bird Johnson.
