HISTORY
Founded in 1883, UT is one of the largest and most respected universities in the nation, considered a “Public Ivy” for its rigorous and competitive academics. It is the home of the Longhorns and over 50,000 students. While the university bolsters the energy of this collection of neighborhoods, there’s much more to this section of the city. The area has been steadily growing and becoming a destination for families and older adults. The most recent neighborhood initiative enacted in 2004 was the University Neighborhood Overlay (UNO) plan, which sought to consolidate student housing and bring UT students closer to the university, creating a condensed campus environment, improving parking, and accommodating a growing neighborhood population.
WEST CAMPUS REAL ESTATE MARKET
UT area real estate is ideal for students, singles, or couples seeking one and two bedroom apartments, condos, or duplexes. This is a rapidly growing area in high demand, so housing options are plentiful (especially for renters) but spaces tend to move fast. You will also find many beautiful, spacious, multi-bedroom homes that span from modern to historic. These are great options for families or individuals who want easy access to an active environment, but also enjoy a residential feel with a large yard and quieter immediate surroundings.
EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES IN THE UT AREA
With an abundance of clothing stores, coffee shops, bookstores and diverse restaurant choices along “The Drag” (Guadalupe Street), residents won’t be hard-pressed to find things to do in the UT area. Grab breakfast at one of the area’s many diners serving brunch, enjoy tacos and tamales at nearby Mexican eateries, or take a quiet afternoon to get work done in the coffeeshop of your choice. Residents can also choose from a multitude of pubs and taverns with outdoor seating. For art and history lovers, the University of Texas provides the Blanton Museum of Art with over 17,000 pieces as well as the Texas Natural Science Center and the Briscoe Center for American History. You’ll also be within walking distance to the extensive Lyndon Baines Johnson Library. In addition, sports aficionados will love being at the heart of Austin athletics in the home of the Texas Longhorns. Living in this neighborhood will grant you easy access to games during any season.
