Austin Events this August

If you've been lucky enough to call Austin your home, you know how hot this summer has been. As much as we'd love the heat to disappear, the summer isn't over just yet. But it's not all bad! August is jam-packed with foodie delights, live shows, outdoor movies, and grand sights to behold. Take out your calendar and mark the days where you and your fellow Austinites can enjoy some Summer fun. 

Food Festivals

Austin Ice Cream FestivalAugust in Austin is full of festivals, but of a sweeter kind. On August 8th, scream for some ice cream at the Austin Ice Cream Festival hosted by Fiesta Gardens. For $10 (children 8 and under get in for free), you will gain entry and free ice cream. There will be live music, games for the whole family, and competitions. Choose from popsicle sculpting, an ice cream eating contest, or bring your own ice cream and compete for the best homemade ice cream recipe.

For fans of something a little spicier, try out the Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival on August 23rd. Burn your way through three rounds of intense hot sauce and salsa tasting. First is homemade sauces, then restaurants' spicy creations, and finally the brand names. Food trucks and vendors will also be present including Torchy's Tacos. Benefiting Capital Area Food Bank, bring three nonperishable food items for entry or a suggested donation of $5.

Lone Star Beer Texas Heritage Festival takes place on August 29 and is completely free to the public. This carnival-themed event will have loads of games, live Texas bands, food, and of course beer. Although admission is free, there is a limited number of entries so you can ensure your spot by buying a ticket online. All of the proceeds will benefit Capital Area Food Bank.

Live Shows

You only have a few weeks left until Hairspray ends its summer run at Zilker Hillside Theatre. Zilker's summer show, which runs from Thursday's to Sunday's until August 15th, attracts thousands of Austinites eager for a live musical to fill them with glee. Bring your blanket and cooler and get ready for one of the most joyous musicals of all time. Entrance is free, and parking is $5.

On Thursday's this summer enjoy a free, live show at the Grove. Unplugged at the Grove is a popular destination for Austin music fans. August's line-up includes Uncle Lucius, The Suffers, Suzanna Choffel, and Kaleo.

The Park at the Long Center is having its 13th annual Concerts in the Park. Enjoy the melodious sounds from Austin Symphony Orchestra on Sunday's this summer free of charge. Relax with your picnic basket and loved ones to some classical, jazz, or pop tunes.

Get Fit

Free Yoga on the DocksGet fit this summer with Free Yoga on the Docks at Alta's Cafe, hosted by Black Swan Yoga. Wind down on Sunday evenings with this free class open to all levels of expertise, not to mention the gorgeous view of Lady Bird Lake helping to calm your senses even more.

If you're looking for some fellow cyclists in Austin, meet up with hundreds of your neighboring pedal pushers for a Thursday Night Social Ride. This community of cyclists ride for about 12 to 15 miles and ends its cycle at a different bar each week.

Celebrate Austin Pride with the Austin Pride Festival and 5K, one of the largest LGBTQ fundraiser and awareness events in Texas. On August 29th, learn more about how you can support the LGBTQ community. Also, choose from a plethora of organizations so that you can become more involved and even volunteer next year. Don't forget to bring your running shoes! 

Summer at the Movies

Steiner Ranch Movies in the ParkCool off this summer at Deep Eddy Pool. Come on August 1st and you can watch Toy Story while you wade in the refreshing waters. Deep Eddy's Splash Movie Night takes place every summer and attracts larger crowds each year. Don't miss this family-friendly event that always delivers the fun.

If you'd rather keep dry during your movie, check out Steiner Ranch's Movie at the Park. They will be showing the Blind Side on August 8th, which will be your last day to catch Steiner Ranch's summer series.

If you're a mega fan of Anime, then you are in luck. The Anime Overload Convention provides countless panels, gaming, and video all related to Anime and Japanese pop-culture. Wild Summer

Austin Bat Fest logoPet lovers unite at the Austin Pet Expo! This free two-day event from August 1st to 2nd located at the Palmer Events Center has everything you and your pet need. From groomers, to trainers, to the latest gear and treats, the Austin Pet Expo is your one stop all-around shop. Bring your pet to this fun gathering and receive discounts on vaccinations and get a free nail trim! There will also be a pet costume contest and animal talent show.

One of the biggest events in Texas, bear witness to 1.5 million bats fly across the night sky for this year's Bat Fest on August 22nd. These Mexican free-tailed bats will emerge from beneath the Congress Avenue bridge as they make their journey around Austin. This is truly a sight to behold. While you wait for the grand unveiling, enjoy live music from three stages, games and activities, and countless food options from Austin's best restaurants and vendors. Get in on the fun by competing for best bat costume, worth a prize of $100. Entrance fee is $15 in cash at the gate.
