10 Things To Do on a Rainy Day in Austin

Austin, Texas has about 230 total days of partial or total sunshine per year. Although central Texas is known for its dry, humid summers, we get about 34 inches of rain annually, with May and June being the wettest months. This can be a bummer for Austinites, since so many of us love to be outside. Luckily, there are plenty of awesome indoor activities around Austin to keep you occupied during our rainy season! Here are some of our favorites.

Alamo Drafthouse

This movie theatre chain shows all the newest releases (with drinks and dinner available!) and hosts a variety of quirky events throughout the week like movie quote-a-longs, genre theme nights, marathons, and more.

Blazer Tag Adventure Center

This 3 story arena is the largest laser tag facility Texas has to offer and it’s a great way to spend an active, energetic day inside. If laser tagging isn’t your thing, at the same location you can also hang at the arcade or test your limits on an indoor ropes course. Suitable for anyone 7 years or older.

Austin Rock Gym

Everyone from beginners to experts can enjoy the indoor rock climbing courses at the Austin Rock Gym. They have various levels for different skill sets, so you’ll have fun whether this is your first time rock climbing or you’re used to scaling the walls at the Greenbelt. Children, teens, and adults are welcome.

K1 Speed Indoor Kart Racing

Most go-kart tracks are outdoors, so having easy access to an indoor place to race is another bonus for Austinites. K1 Austin has one of the largest tracks in the country and the karts here reach speeds of almost 45 miles per hour. Racing enthusiasts can also browse K1’s collection of race suits worn by famous drivers, autographed memorabilia, and professional race cars.

Comedy Clubs

Shake off rainy day gloom by catching a comedy show at Capitol City Comedy Club or Esther’s Follies. Cap City has hosted greats like Ellen Degeneres and Louis CK and hosts a stand-up comedy show nearly every night of the week. Esther’s Follies is an iconic modern vaudeville theatre in Austin that serves up laughs through sketches, musical numbers, and even magic tricks.

Brewery Tours

Did you know that Austin was ranked number 8 on Travel Leisure’s America’s Best Beer Cities list? Austin is home to several microbreweries such as 512, Live Oak, Austin BeerWorks, and Hops and Grain (pictured here) that offer tours, letting visitors walk through and even sample different in-house beers. Visit a brewery’s website to find out what time tours leave and get a taste of Austin’s vibrant craft beer community.

Pinballz Arcade

Who says arcade games went out of style after the 1980’s? Pinballz Arcade is a massive, 13,000 square foot modern arcade that has over 200 games. Visitors will find every type of game here: pinball, classic video arcade games, air hockey, shooting games, driving games, skeeball, basketball, and more. All ages are welcome here, so bring your friends and/or family.

Museums and Art Galleries

The city of Austin has several wonderful museums and art galleries. Take advantage of dreary weather by spending your day channeling your creative side at the Blanton Art and Mexic-Arte museums or learning about your surroundings at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum.

iFly

A high tech vertical wind tunnel pushes a wall of air beneath you, allowing you to float. There are no parachutes or nets--just you and the air. They’ll provide all the safety training and equipment you need, and everyone from children to adults can book a flight!
